Specialised personal training with Shaun

I’m a specialised personal trainer in Queens Park London and I help people to move well for longer. Working with me will help you to become more confident and comfortable in your own body, with long-lasting energy and vitality. If you decide to train with me, the emphasis of our work will be on your health, wellbeing, longevity and sustainability.

I don’t focus on aesthetics at the expense of your long-term health and well-being. Even though a six-pack may be a happy side-effect of our work together, we won’t take any shortcuts that can cause imbalance and damage to your system.

My aim as your personal trainer is guide you, so you can become a master of your own body and movement-strategies, and enjoy a freedom of movement that lasts you a lifetime.

Who can personal training help?

My specialised personal training is ideal for you, if:

  • You are a professional, or semi-professional athlete, that needs a more specialized approach.
  • You are not an athlete, but you want more for your body and mind.
  • You have a chronic condition, that creates movement limitations.
  • You want to be able to play with your children, and your grandchildren to come.
  • You want to stop the endless cycle of tension, pain and discomfort.
  • You want to understand how your body works, not just be told what to do, so you can help yourself.
  • You are tired of the same boring routine.

My personal training areas of expertise

I draw my expertise from a wide range of experience, drawing from 12 years in the business, and working with people from all walks of life. Click the sub headings below to learn more about my specialist areas:

Prehab training

This a form or style of training to help prepare the body for the tough times of life: particular events that may throw you. Think of the Dad’s race at a kid’s sports day. If he had done the training, that 100m dash would not have ended in a sprained ankle. Or, preparing your body and mind for your first marathon challenge.

Every person’s body is different, and a standard program may not be tailored to your unique body shape, neurology and challenges. That’s where I come in: to make sure you finish the next race and scale the next hurdle, with ease, confidence, and injury-free.

Athletes performance and detraining

Performance training is a carefully crafted personal training program for professional and semi-professional athletes. This approach will gear you up systematically over time, helping you peak at the right time and achieve your best goal.

Detraining, on the other hand, is focused on athletes who have stopped competing. If you simply stop performing, without a detraining program, you’re likely to run into massive injuries and depressed moods. The detraining program helps your body adapt to the lower-intensity movement. We reverse-engineer all the stresses your body had to endure during athletic events, and prolonged competitive careers.

Restorative training

Simply put, restorative training will help keep you going and functionally fit for lifestyle demands.

This training focuses on easing pain – like a chronic painful lower back – or regaining lost function – like an unstable shoulder. We get you back to a place where you feel invigorated both in your body and mind.

Skills-based movement training

In this type of personal training program, we focus on training toward total movement mastery. With this approach, we use movement as an extension into greater life-skills. We make life your movement playground. We discover that we can feel, live and experience ourselves in a more embodied way.

We discover the small little movements that make up a full skill like a handstand, golf swing, yoga or Pilates exercises, and become masters of these.

Flexibility and mobility training

Flexibility and mobility are two very different, and essential movement skills:

Flexibility is the capacity to stretch our joints further, without injury.

Mobility, is the capacity with which we can our joints with strong, supportive muscles.

Our main focus in this training is to ease the years of tension and restriction in your body, so you don’t have to be scared of reaching too far or stretching too deep.

Movement Coaching

The two worlds of mind and body, intersect with this practice. Yes, a practice. This is not a style of training that is linear, it takes on many forms and shapes, and the practitioner will learn, struggle and enlighten themselves along the way.

There is no formula. This practice is self-led and self-solved. It’s a discovery and growth of your body, rather than a forced exercise. When faced with a ‘movement challenge’, it is a powerful reminder of how the mind can restrict one’s own potential.

Allowing for all of you, all of your attributes and all the skills you have, flexibility, mobility, strength and coordination to complete a task. It’s all about learning, listening and understanding. There is an infinite wisdom of the body, that we can tap into and accessing this knowledge through deep practice, self-observation and reflection, is the only way we can move toward ones deepest unconscious mastery of our abilities.

Balance, rhythm and coordination- training

Movement fluidity and control, leads to greater ease of movement and less chance of injury. Think of an orchestra playing, the intricate but complex way of all those sounds melting together to make a master piece. We want the same sort of harmony for your body, when we walk, jump, bend, twist and bounce our way through life. We strive for the best tune with our bodies, so the tone will be balanced enough to create fluid movement.

Postural rehab training

Good posture is not just about looking like one of those upright grid charts. It’s not about walking around, balancing books on your head.

Your posture constantly adapts to your movement. I will help you discover and understand how to improve your dynamic posture. How long you can sustain it and when you move, how to have a great posture in all possible positions.

Lifestyle coaching

You are the sum total of all your thoughts, behaviours, habits and choices. All of these impact the body and mind in a very intimate way. Sometimes things can slip under the radar, that is ok, and you may need some help finding out why.

This is where I hear your biggest desires, fears, goals or doubts about what to do next. Parts of your life/lifestyle implementing changes may not be best serving you and helping you get where you want to be, so we modify your movement program to fit with your lifestyle, or help you find ways to adapt your lifestyle, so you can better implement your movement programs.

What to expect from working together

We’ll first start with a thorough history and a 90-minute to 2-hour movement assessment. The assessment will look at a full movement analysis: whole body and joint-by-joint.

We then look at balance and coordination, and a neural screen. This is the most robust and comprehensive approach to understanding how your body functions and where we can go from there, leaving no stone unturned.

As everyone is different and has their own particular needs, I’ll devise a package that is tailored for you. Sessions are 1 hour, every week in the beginning and depending on your needs, we can switch to fortnightly.

I recommend booking a block of 6 to 10 sessions to start and ad-hoc sessions can be purchased if you prefer. After your assessment, we will have a clearer picture in determining what you will need and can more accurately advise on the number of sessions needed.

Where do training sessions take place?

I encourage some environmental exposure and offer outdoor personal training sessions in Queen’s Park – North West London.

If outdoor training is not possible or not suited to your particular situation, then sessions are held in a studio nearby.

Once you have completed your assessment, it is also possible to manage your programme and provide further coaching sessions online via Skype, Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp.
